Kanye West says he is separating after 2 years from The Gap

NEW YORK (AP) — Kanye West says he is breaking up with The Gap.

A lawyer for Kanye West, who goes by Ye, told The Associated Press that a letter has been sent to the clothing chain Thursday to terminate the contract between Gap and West’s company, Yeezy.

The conflict came a year after Yeezy’s first item—a blue puffer jacket—appeared in Gap stores. The deal was announced in June 2020.

West’s attorney said in a letter shared with the AP Thursday that Gap failed to meet obligations in the agreement, including delivering merchandise at Gap Store locations and creating dedicated YZY Gap stores.

“Gap is left with no option but to terminate their cooperation agreement due to Gap’s substantial non-compliance,” Nicolas Gravante, a lawyer for Cadwalder Wickersham & Taft’s West, said in an emailed statement to the AP. “You tried to work through these issues with Gap directly and through counsel. He got nowhere.”

Gravante said Gap’s failure to comply with the terms of the contract has been costly. He said West plans to open Yeezy retail stores.

West has drawn criticism on social media against Gap as well as Adidas AG, where he has a similar deal. Adidas declined to comment. The Gap did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday.

The San Francisco Retailer Was Hoping partnership with West Will resonate with customers in a period of declining sales. For Yeezy, having more than 1,100 Gap stores around the world could have put their brand in front of more people.

The West has a history with the Gap. He worked in one of its stores in Chicago as a teenager. And he told Vanity Fair magazine in 2015 that he wanted to be the creative director for the brand.
